Offline Non-Isolated Converter Protection

Bourns and TI have partnered to provide a low cost solution for overload protection of low power offline converters. The solution consists of 190V-275V to 5Vdc 0.5A converter using the high voltage monolithic controller UCC28880 together with a Bourns Fly back Transformer SM91047EL and 0.75A resettable fuse (MF-MSMF075). The turns ratio of the transformer is optimized to limit current peaks on the secondary side during overloads while the resettable fuse protects the output diode and secondary winding during the short circuit test. Overloads of 1.5Amps cause the resettable fuse to trip within 4 seconds. This solution works well especially when driving large capacitors compared with IC overcurrent protection.

Circuit Protection Devices

Bourns manufactures and supplies a wide range of circuit protection technologies, including fuses, PTC thermistors, varistors, GDTs, resettable thermal cut-offs, surge protection devices, hybrid protectors, discrete semiconductor solutions, and more. Reliable surge protection is a critical design consideration to help ensure operational reliability of consumer electronics, industrial/communication equipment, automotive, battery charging, energy storage infrastructure, and renewable energy harvesting ecosystems.

ACTP AC Transient Protector

Bourns ACTP (AC Transient Protector) for protecting offline power supplies is designed to withstand a ±2.5kV combinational wave surge per IEC 61000-4-5 when used in series with an appropriate overvoltage clamp device. ACTP comes in a SMB (DO-214AA) package and is designed to be used in series with an overvoltage clamp device. The precise and stable voltage of Bourns ACTP raises the turn-on voltage threshold of the series combination for low frequency overvoltage conditions and has minimal impact on the voltage clamp level when subjected to a lightning surge.
